Some information about the Masai Mara Reserve
The Masai Mara Game Reserve (or Maasai Mara), in English Masai Mara Game Reserve or Masai Mara National Reserve, is a large nature reserve located in the southwestern part of Kenya. The name of the reserve derives from the name of the Masai people (who inhabit various areas in the Serengeti plain) and the Mara River.
The reserve, established in 1961, is not protected as a national park, but as a game reserve; consequently it is not administered by the Kenya Wildlife Service (the government institution for environmental protection) but by the local district authorities. Entrance fees to the Masai Mara (like other national parks) are an important source of income for Kenya; the entrance fee in 2004 cost 30 US dollars. Inside the park there is no shortage of accommodation facilities, from comfortable lodges to tented camps.
The surface of the Masai Mara is 1500 km2. The entire area is crossed by the Great Rift Valley that connects the Mediterranean Sea to central Mozambique. The most represented habitat is that of the African prairie or savannah, dotted with typical acacias in the south-eastern area. Most of the fauna is concentrated on the western edge, where the marshy plain is rich in water and less frequented by tourists, who concentrate in the eastern area, about 224 kilometers from Nairobi.
The reserve borders the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, with which it forms a single ecosystem. The reserve is known for its exceptional concentration of fauna and for the famous Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras that takes place in April-May.
The most famous icon of the Masai Mara is probably the image of the lion, of which there are large prides; in the park, however, all the so-called Big Five are present, although the population of black rhinos is in serious danger (in 2000, the presence of only 37 specimens was estimated). Hippos are numerous in the Mara River and the Talek River. Cheetahs are also present, but they too are considered endangered, perhaps also due to the disturbance that tourists cause to their daytime hunting activity.
As in the Serengeti Park, wildebeests are the main inhabitants (millions of specimens). They migrate from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara in spring and vice versa in autumn. There are also numerous other species of antelope, in particular the Thomson’s gazelle and the Grant’s gazelle, the impala, and others. Large herds of zebras are found everywhere in the reserve. Masai giraffes also live on the plains. The birdlife includes hundreds of species.
Numerous anti-poaching units work in the park, patrolling the areas not frequented by tourists.
